WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: This workshop will identify sexual health considerations for children and youth living in group homes and residential settings. We will explore policy implications pertaining to sexual health and youth in care, while deepening our understanding of broader legal, social and health issues.

  • Rene Ross is a certified sexual health educator, human rights activist and the Executive Director at the Sexual Health Centre for Cumberland County in Amherst, Nova Scotia. For more than 15 years, Rene has worked to advance the fundamental human rights of marginalized populations including sex workers, street involved youth, youth who exchange sex for survival and sexually exploited youth. Rene is passionate about community engagement and co-chaired the development of the strategy to prevent sexual violence in Nova Scotia and led youth engagement efforts across the province to inform the strategy. Previous to this, Rene was the Executive Directorof Stepping Stone, in Halifax, providing essential support to sex workers and former sex workers in the region. Now based in her home county in rural Nova Scotia, Rene delivers a range of sexual health programs and services to her community, including the delivery of an inclusive sexual health education program to thousands of youth each year. Rene’s current projects and passions centre on using entertainment and social media channels for sexual health education on contentious issues, and supporting youth and adults with intellectual disabilities, specifically those living in residentialcare facilities and group homes. Rene holds a degree in Political Science from Acadia University and a post graduate certificate in sexual health from The University of Alberta.
