Definitions of Sexual Health

Sexuality is understood as the quality of being either male or female. It means many things: how we feel about ourselves; what roles we play in society; and reproduction. It is not limited to how we behave sexually. It is the total of our physical, emotional and spiritual responses, thoughts, and feelings. Sexuality is more who we are than what we do. Sexuality is a lifelong dynamic learning process. Sexuality is, in the broadest sense, the psychic energy which finds physical and emotional expression in the desire for contact, warmth, tenderness and love.

Sexual Health is defined by the World Health Organization (Technical Report Series #572) as "the integration of the somatic, emotional, intellectual and social aspects of sexual being in ways that are positively enriching and that enhance personality, communication and love". Sexual Health includes but is not limited to: sexual decision making; communication skills; development of healthy attitudes about sexuality and sexual behavior; and absence of sexuality transmitted infections and their sequelae.
